Festival of Colors! 

Holashtak: Holashtak begins 8 days prior to Holi and gives a feeling that Holi is on its way. As per the Hindu beliefs, some auspicious activities are not done during the Holashtak days. Preparations of Holika Dahan and Holi starts on Holashtak. 

Holika Dahan

Holika Dahan is celebrated on the evening prior to Holi. Keeping the legend of Prahlad and Holika in mind, huge bonfire is arranged. Images and idols of Holika are burnt and traditional songs are sung. 

In 2014, Holika Dahan is on March 16.

Holi

March is the month to celebrate the most colorful day of the year 'Holi'. Sky turns colorful, air gets filled with laughter and children are seen roaming here and there with their Pichkaris. Also, known as the harvest festival, Holi welcomes spring and makes the atmosphere go green and beautiful.

Ugadi

Holi has gone and now it’s is the turn to celebrate ‘Ugadi’. Hindu calendar states this festival as ‘New Year’ and therefore, it is the time to make new beginnings. Also, give your taste buds an opportunity to enjoy the signature delicacies of this day. 

In 2014, Ugadi is on March 31. Celebrate the Hindu New year!

Navratri

AstroSage is once again back with an interview of an expert astrologer. Today, we will talk to our expert astrologer ‘SN Rao’. If you have interests in Vedic astrology, western astrology, KP system, and palmistry; then we are sure that this interview will take you closer to your interests. 

 

1. How did you get interested in astrology initially? What made you come into the field of astrology as a profession?

As a child, I began to develop an interest in astrology pretty early in life. It happened because my grandparents used to discuss the positive periods based on Nakshatras (constellation) and transits of planets. I used to read books on astrology. During those days, there wasn’t nearly as much literature available as there is now. Slowly and steadily I made a collection of astrology books and pursued my interest. I am indebted to the professors of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (Mumbai) for scientifically explaining each and every subject. I pursued my studies to complete my Jyotirvid and Jyotish Visharad. I used to study the charts of my friends as well as my relatives. I was happy to understand the insights that I had discovered. I do not consider myself as a professional in the field of astrology, as it gives me tremendous pleasure to remain a student of this ardent science. Also, I like to develop my knowledge by analyzing each and every case.

2. What astrological system do you use and why?

There are many systems used by different astrologers. I have come across many such methods by reading western and Vedic books written by eminent writers in this field. Some are easy to understand and practical, whereas others require many cumbersome calculations. With experience, trial & error methods, one usually develops his own unique style of prediction. This is what I have experienced. Initially, I was confident of western methods of prediction. I switched over to KP method in between and then moved on to Vedic astrology. Now, I usually try to predict after confirming these three different styles of prediction. I am sure that if all the three styles give a single answer, then your prediction cannot go wrong. It also helps if you are stuck up and confused using a single style of prediction techniques. My advice for the young astrologers is to adopt any of the above systems which they can relate and understand well. 

3. Any incident related to astrology in your life or your prediction, which created impact and that you want to share with our readers?

There are many incidents in life which can change the belief of an individual. Some incidents happen when least expected and make us believe that there are some unseen forces which can change our life. An interest into understanding these hidden forces and the ability to understand them can help you decipher these powerful energy. Looking back at these incidents, I feel that I have taken a right choice in garnering the basic knowledge about astrology.

4. What are your suggestions for budding astrologers or for those who’re interested in this subject?

An interest is like a small and gentle bud which needs to be nurtured carefully. The young and budding astrologers should learn astrology in a scientific manner from reputed institutes like Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. Learning the subject from a learned person / teacher definitely helps. Developing the interest can be cultivated by reading books. There are many books available in the market written by eminent and learned authors which give insight and depth in this field.

5. According to you, which are the best astrology books that one should read?

There are many books available in the market for learning astrology. It is not possible to name all of them. Some basic ones are given below:

• Western astrology– Books by Alan Leo, Max Heindel are considered to be the basics
• KP System– There are many books from their publications. Each book has important and interesting revelations
• Vedic astrology– The epics like Varahamihira, Brihat parashara, Uttara Kalamrita, Mantreshwar Phaladeepika, Jataka Navaneetham, Sarvartha Chintamani are a must. 
• Books by B V Raman, Chandulal patel, Bipin behari, G S Agarwal, O P Verma and many more are also worth reading.

6. What would you like to say to the users of AstroSage.com?

How To Begin Your Day?

Be assured that you perform the right rituals, here are the rituals of the day:

1. To begin Masik Vinayaka Ganesh Chaturthi, devotees get up early morning and take shower. 
2. After wearing clean clothes, idol of Ganesha is kept on the place of worship. As per the rituals, the face of the idol is covered with a clean cloth. 
3. Decorate the idol with fresh flowers, garlands and apply Chandan (sandalwood) paste on the forehead of Ganesha's idol. 
4. Spread some rice and place Kalash (earthen pot) filled with holy water over it. This process of establishing the Kalash is known as Purna Kumbha Kalasha Sthapana. 
5. Chant Lord Ganesha's mantras, as it is believed that this rituals invokes life in his idol. This is known as Prana Pratishtha. 
6. Now worship the Lord with 21 modaks (Ladoos), 21 leaves of Dhruva grass, incense sticks, coconut, sindoor (vermilion), Kapoor (camphor), Chandan (sandalwood paste), betel leaf & betel nuts, cotton wicks. 
7. Chant Ganesh Stotra or you can also chant hymns from Ganapati Atharvashirsha Upanishad.
8. Perform Ganesha Aarti and bow in front of Ganesha’s idol too seek his blessings.

Masik Vinayaka Ganesha Chaturthi Vrat

Masik Vinayaka Ganesha Chaturthi Vrat can be observed in two ways. You can either opt for Nirjaal Vrat (intake of everything is avoided, including water),or you may observe Phalahar Vrat (intake of fruits, nuts, and milk is allowed).

Hi, welcome to 2 min astrology course. Today, I am going to tell you 15 important rules by which you will be able to decide whether a planet will act as benefic or malefic.

Rule 1: Planets situated in exalted sign, own sign and friendly sign give good results. On the other hand, debilitated planet, a planet in inimical sign will give malefic results.

Rule 2: Planets aspecting its own house gives good results related to the aspected house.

Rule 3: Planet with its friendly planets and benefic planets generally gives good results. Similarly, planets having friendly or benefic planets in previous and next sign give good results. 

Rule 4: Planet that is reaching toward it exalted sign gives good results.

Rule 5: Planet friendly to ascendant lord gives good results.

Rule 6: Planets owning trikona i.e. 5th and 9th house give good results.

Rule 7: Owner of Kendra, if malefic, will leave their malefic nature. Similarly, if planet owning kendra is benefic, it will leave benefic nature. So, generally malefics owning Kendra is desirable. 

Rule 8: Owner of 3rd, 6th and 11th houses generally give bad results.

Rule 9: Planets in upachya or improving houses 3,6,10,11 improves their own signification. 

These are the best places for natural malefics. 

Rule 10: Planets in 6,8,12 houses generally give malefic results.

Rule 11: Benefics in kendra (1,4,7,10) houses are very good, whereas malefics there are very bad. 

Rule 12: Moon near to Full-Moon-day or Poornima is good, whereas Moon near to No-moon-day or amavasya is bad. 

Rule 13: Planets close to Moon i.e. with Moon, in previous sign of Moon and in next sign of Moon, improves Moon. More planets close to Moon, more powerful will be the Moon.

Rule 14:Mercury, Rahu and Ketu give results of the planets with which those are situated.

Rule 15: Planet close to Sun become combust and give bad results.
