Meaning Of Gurpurab 


Gurpurab means "Guru's Remembrance Day" and the birth anniversary of a Sikh Guru is recognized as Gurpurab. The birth anniversaries of all the 10 Gurus are celebrated to mark the remembrance of the sacrifices done by the Gurus. Every Guru is remembered with complete honor, pride and tribute. Each of the Gurpurab is celebrated with similar kind of traditions and celebrations. However, the only difference is in the history and hymns of that particular occasion.

Guru Gobind Singh: The 10th Guru 


Guru Gobind Singh was born in 1666. He was the son of Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. He gave his life to save religious faith and belief. To achieve the goals of equality, justice, protection of human rights and social good. 

Guru Gobind Singh, who was the founder of Khalsa Panth and 10th Guru of Sikhs, ascended the seat of Guru Nanak Dev Ji in the year 1675 when he was just 9 years. Also known as Dashmesh Pita, he fought against injustice and was the only 'Sarbans Dani’ who sacrificed his father, mother, four sons and himself for the noble cause of religion and justice. To fight the battle of justice and truth, they built an army of saint-soldiers. 

Rituals Before Gurpurab 


Every morning, before three days of Gurpurab, processions are held through the streets. These processions are called Prabhat Pheris and include singing of the hymns on different tunes. Devotees offer sweets and tea to those who participate in marching in the procession. End of Prabhat Pheri is signaled by the Gurpurab day. The holy book - ‘Guru Granth Sahib’ is read continuously in the Gurdwaras during these three days. It is known as Akhand Path.

Gurpurab Day Celebration 


On the occasion of Gurpurab, Gurdwaras all around the country and world wear a festive look. From early morning, devotees gather up in Gurdwaras for performing Shabad Kirtan. On this day, the holy book of Sikhs, ‘Granth Sahib’ is decorated with flowers and is then carried in procession in a palanquin (palki), with religious music. Also, people decorate their homes to add on the festive feel. In the evening, Antim Ardas and Bhog are performed in the Gurdwaras, followed by distribution of Prasad among the devotees. 

Other Activities Of The Day


  1. Special open lunch (Langar) is arranged at Gurdwaras for people of all religions. Devotees serve the food with spirit of service (Seva) and devotion (Bhakti). 
  2. Nagar Kirtans or holy processions are taken out in many cities as a part of the festivity. 
  3. Religious slogans and hymns are chanted which add fervor to the celebration.
  4. Special programmes are organized to promote spirit of Sikhism among the youth.

Hi, welcome to the 2 min astrology tutorial. We have discussed signification and nature of Sun & Moon in last video. Now, let me tell you about remaining planets.

Mars


Mars is of masculine, vice, cruel, aggressive, warrior class, Tamo guni, fire element and Pitta nature. It signifies blood-red color, siblings, battle, weapons, thief, wound, blood, muscles, operation etc. If Mars is malefic, it adversely affects things it signifies; e.g. there may be several incidences of stealing, one might get hurt frequently etc.

Mercury 


Mercury is of impotent, business-class, Rajoguni, having Tridosha i.e. Vata, Pitta and Kapha, and thin nature. Mercury signifies green color, maternal uncle, mathematics, business and speech.

As Mercury signifies mathematics, if Mercury is benefic, the native has sound understanding of Mathematics. On the other hand, one finds it difficult to understand math if one has weak Mercury. In such as case, it’d be better if native chooses arts over science as his academic stream.

Jupiter


By nature, Jupiter is polite, Sattvik, male; it has fat body and Kapha nature. Jupiter signifies yellow color, Vedas, religion, devotion, gold, wisdom, Guru, fat, Kapha, knowledge, progeny, marriage etc.

Venus

Hi, welcome to 2 min astrology course. If you look toward the sky at moment of birth from the place of the birth, the planetary position in sky is called a birth-chart or Kundali. Planets seem to be moving in a circular path when observed from earth. This circular-path is known as zodiac. If we divide zodiac in twelve equal parts, each part is called a zodiac sign. These twelve signs are – Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. It’s very important to remember the order of zodiac signs, because signs are shown using numbers in a birth-chart. 

For example, if 1 is written, it means Aries or first sign. If 2 is written, it means Taurus or second sign and so on.

As per mathematics, a circle consists of 360 degrees. Therefore, 12th part of 360 degrees, i.e. a sign, consists of 30 degrees. However, we need not focus on mathematical part as of now. Just note that each zodiac sign covers 30 degrees.

Every zodiac sign has a fixed lordship and we should also memorize it. Lord of a sign is also referred as owner sometimes. Let’s have a look at lords of different signs.

Mars owns first sign – Aries. Taurus is owned by Venus, Gemini by Mercury, Cancer by Moon, Leo by Sun, Virgo by Mercury–i.e. Mercury is the lord of both Gemini and Virgo–Libra again by Venus, Scorpio by Mars again, Sagittarius by Jupiter, Capricorn and Aquarius by Saturn, and Pisces is owned by Jupiter.

Sun and Moon own only one zodiac sign. Rahu and Ketu do not own any of the signs. Rest of the planets, i.e. Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, own two zodiac signs.

Ekadashi of Paush month is known as Paush Putrada Ekadashi and is observed to please the Lord Vishnu.

Putrada Ekadashi Importance


Every couple loves their child. Everything they do shows their love and affection for their children. One such thing which probably most of the childless couple does is the observance of Putrada Ekadashi fast. On this day, they pray to Lord Vishnu with a hope of getting a child. 

Putrada Ekadashi Legendary Story 


As per the legends, King Suketuman was married to Shaibya. After many years of married life also, the couple remained deprived from the pleasure of having a baby. As a result, the couple and elders of their family were tensed. Suketuman left his kingdom in gloom and went into the forests of Himalayas. One day, he went to the banks of the Mansarovar Lake from where he saw an Ashram (monastic house). Inside the Ashram were 10 saints who in real were divine beings known as Vishvadevas. The King went to them and told them about his situation. After listening to his problem, the saints suggested him to keep fast on that day as it was the day of Putrada Ekadashi. The King agreed and observed the fast. After that, the King returned back to his palace and explained everything to the Queen. Soon after that, the couple was blessed with a son.

Rituals Of The Day


On the day of Putra Ekadashi, the observer gets up early morning and wears clean clothes after taking shower. After this, Lord Vishnu is worshipped with flowers, coconut, betel nut or leaf, fruits and incense stick. The devotee observes fast throughout the day. Mantras are chanted and Vishnu songs are sung and heard. In the evening, Katha (legend of the day) is heard and fruits are consumed. Feeding the Brahmins and offering donations to them on this day is believed to be very fruitful.

  3. Any Vishnu prayer or Gayatri

Vaikuntha Ekadashi


The knowledge of Vaikuntha Ekadashi is obtained from the famous Vishnu Purana. This is a very major day for the South Indians. Major celebrations are conducted in temples of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. 

It is said that on this particular day, door to the heaven (Swarg) is opened. Therefore, observing fast on this day frees the devotee from his sins and helps in the attainment of salvation (Moksha). This day is a major attraction in Tirupati, Venkateswara Temple. 

Dont’s Of Ekadashi


  1. On this day, eating rice should be avoided as it is believed that the demon Muran dwells in rice on the day of Ekadashi.
  2. Intake of non-vegetarian food and alcohol should also be avoided.
  3. Haircut and other such activities should be avoided as well.


Lord Vishnu is known to grant his devotees with all what they ask for. On this Paush Putrada Ekadashi, worship the Lord with all you can and let him bless you with a baby.

What Astrology Says


  1. The prime house for longevity is 8th house. Ascendant sublord indicates about the health and vitality. 
  2. For fixed ascendant, 9th house is Badhaka (obstacle creator) and houses 2 & 7 are general Marak houses (death inflicting houses).
  3. 12th house is for defect, 6th for disease and 8th is for danger, as per Guruji Shree KSK. The ascendant sublord is Mars in 7th house, it is in star of Moon – the 6th lord; thus it is not good. 
  4. The Badhakapati (lord of the ninth house) is Venus and Marak lords are Jupiter and Sun. Sun and Venus are in 11th house and Jupiter is in 5th house.
  5. Sun is in star of Venus and Venus is in star of Sun. Mercury is in star of Sun, Saturn and Jupiter are in star of Jupiter, the Marak Adhipati (Marak houses lord). Rahu and Saturn are in 8th house and Rahu being in sign of Venus is dangerous.
  6. Ketu Mahadasha (major period) is upto 31-12-2015. After that, Mahadasha of Venus will begin and will run till 31-12-2035. Further, there will be the Mahadasha of Sun till 31-12-2041. Thus, there will be Dashas of Badhaka and Maraka simultaneously. 
  7. Rahu is in own star and no planet is in star of Mercury, the eighth lord. Jupiter is aspecting the ascendant, but it is retrograde. There is no other malefic or benefic aspect upon the ascendant. 
  8. Moon is hemmed between the malefics and is aspected by Mars, but ascendant is more or less strong. This horoscope does not promise Purnayushya (full longevity), but it settles for Alpayu (short life) and Madhyayu (medium life span).
  9. Since this is a growing party and not just an individual, it will not be rational to see death of a party. But surely this can show us a period from which there will be least or no activity from this entity. 
  10. Ascendant sub in Marak houses and in star of 6th lord promises problems all along, which will become the cause of its declination.
  11. Ketu Mahadasha is clean and there will be no trouble as such. Then, Venus Mahadasha will operate, which is Badhakapati. Venus, Sun, Mercury and Saturn are significators of 11th house apart from other houses.
  12. Rahu Antara (sub-period) will end on 1-3-2026 in Mahadasha of Venus. Its Pratyantara will remain till 13-8-2023. Thus, we can say that period between 2023 to 2026 will be the period in which this party will tend to become dysfunctional completely.
  13. We have LS POLLS this year and this party has Saturn Antara in Mahadasha of Ketu till 3-1-2015. Saturn is a strong significator of 5th and 8th house apart from others. It is definite that this party will lose heavily in the LS polls and because Saturn being the ascendant lord is also a significator of 12th house. 

As per Shree KSK, it will be their own act which will make the people lose interest in them.

Hi, welcome to 2 min astrology course. We’ve already discussed about planets and zodiac signs. Now, let’s discuss about birth-chart. Check out the image of birth-chart on blackboard.


Forget the numbers written in birth-chart for a while. The colored square on the top is called Ascendant. Ascendant is also called the first house. It’s the starting point where we begin the counting of houses. To understand it more clearly, check out the houses in image – this is first house, this is second, this is third, and this one is twelfth house. Irrespective of number written in it, the location of a house is fixed in a birth-chart. In this birth-chart, Venus and Rahu are posited in fifth house. Moon and Mars are posited in sixth house. Saturn, Sun and Mercury are posited in seventh; and Jupiter is in eleventh house along with Ketu.

These numbers indicate the zodiac signs and with the sign we can find out the lord of the house. In this birth-chart, Ascendant has 11th sign i.e. Aquarius. In other words, the native has Aquarius ascendant. You already know that 11th sign is Aquarius, don’t you?

We also know that Aquarius is owned by Saturn. So in our example chart, ascendant or first house is owned by Saturn. Similarly, second house is owned by Jupiter as ‘12’ is written in it and we know that 12th sign i.e. Pisces is owned by Jupiter.

Owners of zodiac signs are fixed. However, owners of houses differ with birth-charts.

PHARMA sector will also continue receiving astrological support. Buy Lupin, Sun Pharma, Dr Reddy, Divis Lab, Glenmark Pharma Biocon, Auro Pharma, & Wockhardt  etc on every dip. This sector was also predicted last week also & during the week – Cipla, Sun Pharma, Dr Reddy, Coral Lab & Cadila Healthcare etc went up by 5 – 15% from weekly low.

Lohri 2014: Celebrating Fertility With Bonfire

In Punjab, the festival of Lohri will be observed on January 13, 2014. Lohri is considered to be the most important and most awaited day. People who belong to Punjabi community are mostly robust, fun-loving and enthusiastic by nature. The festival of Lohri symbolizes their enthusiasm for festive celebrations.

The festival of Lohri will be observed on January 13, 2014. With the first light of the New Year, people in India are all set to get started with the journey full of celebrations and festivals. The distinctive and perfectly assorted Indian culture is attracting the inhabitants to get closer to some of the very thrilling and enjoyable festivities. The commencement of these celebrations is to be initiated by the festival of Lohri. It is a festival related to harvesting and is celebrated annually in January. 

Legends And Traditions 


On the day of Lohri, little children demand for Lohri from their elders in the form of money and eatables such as Sesame seeds (Til), Gajak, Jaggery, Rewari and Peanuts, to name a few. The children also sing a festive song in praise of Dulla Bhatti. He is considered as the Punjabi Avatar of Robin Hood. He robbed the riches to assist the poor people. 

Performing Bonfire On Lohri


On the day of Lohri, as the sun sets in the evening, huge bonfires are lit in the harvested fields. A few people also perform this in the front yard of the house. At the time of Lohri celebration, a lot of people gather up at one place. They circle around the rising flames of fire and at this time, they throw edibles like puffed rice, popcorns, etc. While doing so, they say “Adar Aye Dilethar jaye”, by this they mean to pray that “may honor come and may poverty peter out”. 

At the time of celebrating the festival of Lohri, they also sing folk songs. Lohri is a festival in which people offer prayers to Agni (fire) to let their land get blessed with fertility and abundance. After they are done with the rounds around the bonfire (Parikrama), gift exchange ritual with relatives and friends begin. Once the Pooja and other related rituals are done, Prasad (holy food offering) is distributed to all the people present in the celebration. The most important part of this celebration is the Lohri Prasad, which includes sweets like Gajak and Rewri together with some other munchies such as peanuts, popcorns and jaggery. After that, all the guests are served with some traditional edibles like cooked mustard herbs with multi-millet chapattis for dinner.

The Traditional Performance


After getting done with all the related rituals, Bhangra, which is the traditional dance of Punjab, is performed by men. This celebration goes on till late night on the day of Lohri. These traditional touches add up more vigor and excitement to the festive mood.

Maghi: The Day Following Lohri


The day of Maghi falls on the next day of Lohri. This day signifies the commencement of Magh month. In accordance with the beliefs of Hindu religion, Maghi is considered to be the most auspicious day for taking a dip into the holy river together with doing some charity. Sweets such as Kheer (sweet rice porridge dessert) are prepared by adding sugar cane juice, rice and milk as Prasad for the day.

Showing Gratitude Toward The Harvest God 


The festival of Lohri comes up with a chance for the people to put aside all their tensions and worries. On this day, people get an opportunity to keep away from their hectic work schedules and to enjoy this festive day to the fullest. On this day, people offer prayers to the harvest God so their land could get the blessings to be amazingly fertile.

What Is Pradosham?


The term ‘Pradosh’ means getting relief from sins and negative karmas. It prevails after the sunset for 2 hours 24 minutes and therefore, that duration is known as ‘Pradosh Kaal’. It is believed that one who worships Lord Shiva during Pradosh Kaal gets relief from all the evil deeds and mistakes. 

Weekly Pradosham


Monday/ Soma Pradosham: Bestows the observer with health and all his wishes are fulfilled. 

Tuesday/ Bhauma Pradosham: For those who are facing financial crunches, observing Bhauma Pradosham is very helpful. Also, it is very effective against diseases and ailments.

Wednesday: Pradosham occurring on Wednesday has great importance for the childless couples. Married couples, who do not have any child, observe this Pradosham to get blessed with their progeny. 

Thursday/ Guru Pradosham: Guru Pradosham helps the observer in raising his confidence level which further helps him to defeat his enemies. 

Saturday/ Shani Pradosham/ Maha Pradosham: Shani Pradosham is very effective and is meant for the happy married life of the couples.

Rituals Followed During Pradosham


To begin with the rituals, the observer takes shower before the sunset. After wearing clean clothes, he/she commences the Puja by worshipping Lord Shiva. To worship Him, His idol or Shivlinga or Nataraja Avatar is needed. Along with the Him, following Gods are also worshipped:

  • Goddess Parvati
  • Kartikeya
  • Ganesha
  • Nandi

During the Puja, a Kalasha (metal pot) is filled with water followed by covering the Kalasha with Durva grass (Cynodon Dactyl). A lotus is drawn on the surface of the grass. After it, flowers, rice, betel nuts, betel leaf and coin are offered to Shiva. To please the deity, Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is chanted for 108 times. The devotee then applies the sacred ash to his/her forehead and lights a lamp before the Lord. 

Pradosham Fast Observance


Devotees not only pray to Lord on this day but also observes fast to honor Shiva. Strict observers worship Shiva throughout the day and night. They chant Mantras and recite His songs and prayers. Such observers do not consume any eatable and refrain from having water too. On the other hand are partial observers who follow the same rituals but break their fast in the evening after the evening prayers. 

Puja Materials You Need


Milk: gives long and healthy life
Curd: blesses the childless couple with child
Lemon: to overcome the fear of death
Ghee: grants Moksha (salvation)
Rice: helps to overcome the financial sufferings
Cooked Rice or Annam: grants a royal life
Coconut: provides luxuries and comforts of life
Sandal: blesses the observer with the beauty like Maa Lakshmi 
Panchamrutham: bestows the devotee with health and wealth
Honey: is used for a melodious voice
Sugar: helps to overcome anger
Sugar cane juice: bestows with good health

Invoke Lord Shiva’s blessings and expel out all the negative karmas with Pradosh Vrat. Pradosham falling every month, provides the best platform to overcome the evil deeds and achieve Moksha.

Celebrating Harvest Festival - Region Wise


Makara Sankranti will be observed on 14th of January, 2014. Makara Sankranti is a festival celebrated with great zeal and zest all over the country. This harvest festival is known by many names depending on the region it is being celebrated. While Makara Sankranti is name followed in majority of the states of India, it is also known as Pongal in the state of Tamil Nadu, Lohri in Punjab, Magh Bihu in Assam, Uttarayan in Gujarat and so on. We will give you an idea of different rituals and customs followed in various states in this article. 

Makara Sankranti


Makara Sankranti, the grand harvest festival is celebrated to mark the journey of sun towards north. As Sankranti festival is celebrated as per the solar calendar, the date remains the same every year, January 14. The actual definition for the word Sankranti is the journey of sun from one zodiac sign to another. But now-a-days, Sankranti is more popularly known as the harvest festival. People thank the Gods for a good harvest and share the joy with one and all. One of the main attractions of Makara Sankranti is the tradition of Kite flying.

Pongal Or Bhogi


Pongal is the festival celebrated by the people of Tamil Nadu. This festival is celebrated for a period of four days. The first day is the Bhogi festival, which symbolizes new beginning. As such, people follow the tradition of getting rid of all the old stuff by throwing them into the bonfire. The second day is the Surya Pongal, when the traditional Pongal (sweet dish) is prepared and the Sun God is worshipped. The third day is called as the Mattu (cow) Pongal. On this day cows, which are one of the main sources for agriculture are worshipped. The main attraction of this day is the Jallikattu (bull fighting). The fourth and the final day is called the Kaanum Pongal, where in people visit the dear and near ones to exchange sweets and gifts. This Festival is also known as ‘Ellu Beerodu’ in Karnataka, celebrated by the people of Kannada community; and in the state of Andhra Pradesh, this festival is called as Sankranti or ‘Pedda Pandiga’ (big festival). 

Magh Bihu In Assam


Magh Bihu is the harvest festival of Assam. This festival is all about extravagant celebrations, which last for weeks. Many traditions are followed by the people of Assam during the Magh Bihu like Tekeli Bhonga, which is the breaking of earthen pots and bull fighting. People from near and far get their bulls to participate in the annual festivals for attractive prize money. This festival goes on for weeks where in makeshift huts are built, in which festive food is served to enjoy. Once the food is eaten, the huts are burned down as per the traditions which are followed. 

Every festival comes alive when celebrated with dear ones. In that context, mother nature is a dear one here. Sankranti, the harvest festival brings everyone closer to mother nature and gives us a chance to thank her for all the good that has been bestowed on us.
